Proverbs 6:1-19

Parental Counsel

6 My son, if you have become a ^(A)guarantor for your neighbor,
Or have given a handshake for a stranger,
²If you have been ensnared by the words of your mouth,
Or caught by the words of your mouth,
³Then do this, my son, and save yourself:
Since you have come into the ^[a]hand of your neighbor,
Go, humble yourself, and be urgent with your neighbor to free yourself.
⁴Give no ^(B)sleep to your eyes,
Nor slumber to your eyelids;
⁵Save yourself like a gazelle from the hunter’s hand,
And like a ^(C)bird from the hand of the fowler.

⁶Go to the ^(D)ant, you ^[b]^(E)lazy one,
Observe its ways and be wise,
⁷Which, having ^(F)no chief,
Officer, or ruler,
⁸Prepares its food ^(G)in the summer
And gathers its provision in the harvest.
⁹How long will you lie down, you ^[c]lazy one?
When will you arise from your sleep?
¹⁰“^(H)A little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to ^[d]rest,”
¹¹^(I)Then your poverty will come in like a ^[e]drifter,
And your need like ^[f]an armed man.

¹²A ^(J)worthless person, a wicked man,
Is one who walks with a ^(K)perverse mouth,
¹³Who ^(L)winks with his eyes, who ^[g]signals with his feet,
Who ^[h]points with his fingers;
¹⁴Who, with ^(M)perversion in his heart, continually ^(N)devises evil,
Who ^[i]^(O)spreads strife.
¹⁵Therefore ^(P)his disaster will come suddenly;
^(Q)Instantly he will be broken and there will be ^(R)no healing.

¹⁶There are six things that the Lord hates,
Seven that are an abomination ^[j]to Him:
¹⁷^(S)Haughty eyes, a ^(T)lying tongue,
And hands that ^(U)shed innocent blood,
¹⁸A heart that devises ^(V)wicked plans,
^(W)Feet that run rapidly to evil,
¹⁹A ^(X)false witness who declares lies,
And one who ^[k]^(Y)spreads strife among brothers.

Overcoming the World

5 ^(A)Everyone who believes that Jesus is the ^[a]Christ has been ^(B)born of God, and everyone who loves the ^[b]Father ^(C)loves the child born of Him. ²^(D)By this we know that ^(E)we love the children of God, when we love God and ^[c]follow His commandments. ³For ^(F)this is the love of God, that we ^(G)keep His commandments; and ^(H)His commandments are not burdensome. ⁴For ^[d]whoever has been ^(I)born of God ^(J)overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

⁵Who is the one who overcomes the world, but the one who ^(K)believes that Jesus is the Son of God? ⁶This is the One who came ^(L)by water and blood, Jesus Christ; not ^[e]with the water only, but ^[f]with the water and ^[g]with the blood. It is ^(M)the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. ⁷For there are ^(N)three that testify: ⁸^[h]the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are ^[i]in agreement. ⁹^(O)If we receive the testimony of people, the testimony of God is greater; for the testimony of God is this, that ^(P)He has testified concerning His Son. ¹⁰The one who believes in the Son of God ^(Q)has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has ^(R)made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. ¹¹And the testimony is this, that God has given us ^(S)eternal life, and ^(T)this life is in His Son. ¹²^(U)The one who has the Son has the life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.

This Is Written That You May Know

¹³^(V)These things I have written to you who ^(W)believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have ^(X)eternal life. ¹⁴This is ^(Y)the confidence which we have ^[j]before Him, that, ^(Z)if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. ¹⁵And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, ^(AA)we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

¹⁶If anyone sees his brother or sister ^[k]committing a sin not leading to death, ^(AB)he shall ask and ^[l]God will, for him, give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. ^(AC)There is sin leading to death; ^(AD)I am not saying that he should ask about that. ¹⁷^(AE)All unrighteousness is sin, and ^(AF)there is sin not leading to death.

¹⁸^(AG)We know that ^(AH)no one who has been born of God ^[m]sins; but He who was born of God ^(AI)keeps him, and ^(AJ)the evil one does not ^(AK)touch him. ¹⁹^(AL)We know that ^(AM)we are of God, and that ^(AN)the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. ²⁰And ^(AO)we know that ^(AP)the Son of God has come, and has ^(AQ)given us understanding so that we may know ^(AR)Him who is true; and we ^(AS)are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. ^(AT)This is the true God and ^(AU)eternal life.

The Commendation of Wisdom

8 Does not ^(A)wisdom call,
And understanding ^[a]raise her voice?
²On top of ^(B)the heights beside the way,
Where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
³Beside the ^(C)gates, at the opening to the city,
At the entrance of the doors, she cries out:
⁴“To you, people, I call,
And my voice is to ^[b]mankind.
⁵You ^(D)naive ones, understand prudence;
And, you ^(E)fools, understand ^[c]wisdom!
⁶Listen, for I will speak ^(F)noble things;
And the opening of my lips will reveal ^(G)right things.
⁷For my ^(H)mouth will proclaim truth;
And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
⁸All the words of my mouth are in righteousness;
There is nothing ^(I)crooked or perverted in them.
⁹They are all ^(J)straightforward to him who understands,
And right to those who ^(K)find knowledge.
¹⁰Accept my ^(L)instruction and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold.
¹¹For wisdom is ^(M)better than ^[d]jewels;
And ^(N)all desirable things cannot compare with her.

¹²“I, wisdom, ^(O)dwell with prudence,
And I find ^(P)knowledge and discretion.
¹³The ^(Q)fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
^(R)Pride, arrogance, ^(S)the evil way,
And the ^(T)perverted mouth, I hate.
¹⁴^(U)Advice is mine and ^(V)sound wisdom;
I am understanding, ^(W)power is mine.
¹⁵By me ^(X)kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.
¹⁶By me princes rule, and nobles,
All who judge rightly.
¹⁷I ^(Y)love those who love me;
And ^(Z)those who diligently seek me will find me.
¹⁸^(AA)Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring ^(AB)wealth and righteousness.
¹⁹My fruit is ^(AC)better than gold, even pure gold;
And my yield better than ^(AD)choice silver.
²⁰I walk in the way of righteousness,
In the midst of the paths of justice,
²¹To endow those who love me with wealth,
That I may ^(AE)fill their treasuries.

²²“The Lord ^[e]created me ^(AF)at the beginning of His way,
Before His works ^[f]of old.
²³From eternity I was ^[g]^(AG)established,
From the beginning, ^(AH)from the earliest times of the earth.
²⁴When there were no ^(AI)ocean depths, I was born,
When there were no springs abounding with water.
²⁵^(AJ)Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills, I was born;
²⁶While He had not yet made the earth and the ^[h]fields,
Nor the first dust of the world.
²⁷When He ^(AK)established the heavens, I was there;
When ^(AL)He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,
²⁸When He made firm the skies above,
When the springs of the deep became ^[i]fixed,
²⁹When ^(AM)He set a boundary for the sea
So that the water would not violate His ^[j]command,
When He marked out ^(AN)the foundations of the earth;
³⁰Then ^(AO)I was beside Him, as a master workman;
And I was His delight daily,
^[k]Rejoicing always before Him,
³¹^[l]Rejoicing in the world, His earth,
And having ^(AP)my delight in the sons of mankind.

³²“Now then, sons, ^(AQ)listen to me,
For ^(AR)blessed are those who keep my ways.
³³^(AS)Listen to instruction and be wise,
And do not neglect it.
³⁴^(AT)Blessed is the person who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at my doorposts.
³⁵For ^(AU)one who finds me finds life,
And ^(AV)obtains favor from the Lord.
³⁶But one who ^[m]sins against me ^(AW)injures himself;
All those who ^(AX)hate me ^(AY)love death.”

Mark 13:14-37

¹⁴“Now ^(A)when you see the ^(B)abomination of desolation standing where it should not be—^[a]let the ^[b]reader understand—then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. ¹⁵^[c]^(C)Whoever is on the ^[d]housetop must not go down, nor go in to get anything out of his house. ¹⁶And ^[e]whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. ¹⁷But woe to those women who are pregnant, and to those who are nursing babies in those days! ¹⁸Moreover, pray that it will not happen in winter. ¹⁹For those days will be such a time of tribulation as has not occurred ^(D)since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will again. ²⁰And if the Lord had not shortened those days, no ^[f]life would have been saved; but for the sake of the ^[g]elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days. ²¹And then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the ^[h]Christ’; or, ‘Look, there He is’; do not believe it; ²²for false christs and ^(E)false prophets will arise, and will provide ^(F)signs and ^(G)wonders, in order to mislead, if possible, the elect. ²³But beware; I have told you everything in advance.

The Return of Christ

²⁴“But in those days, after that tribulation, ^(H)the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light, ²⁵^(I)and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken. ²⁶And then they will see ^(J)the Son of Man ^(K)coming in clouds with great power and glory. ²⁷And then He will send forth the angels, and ^(L)will gather together His ^[i]elect from the four winds, ^(M)from the end of the earth to the end of heaven.

²⁸“Now learn the parable from the fig tree: as soon as its branch has become tender and sprouts its leaves, you know that summer is near. ²⁹So you too, when you see these things happening, ^[j]recognize that ^[k]He is near, right at the ^[l]door. ³⁰Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. ³¹Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. ³²^(N)But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.

³³“Watch out, ^(O)stay alert; for you do not know when the appointed time is. ³⁴^(P)It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and ^[m]putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay alert. ³⁵Therefore, ^(Q)stay alert—for you do not know when the ^[n]master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or ^(R)when the rooster crows, or ^(S)in the morning— ³⁶so that he does not come suddenly and find you ^(T)asleep. ³⁷What I say to you I say to all: ‘^(U)Stay alert!’”
